Relocation can be stressful and dreadful experience or it can be adventurous and exciting depending on the reason for moving. Having a plan can make relocation less eventful. Here are some tips on how to organize your move.
- As early as time permit, go through every room in your house and determine what you would need to take with you. Donate or get rid of the rest of the accumulation. Do the inventory and document all the items you are moving.
- Make an appointment of the moving company you have finally chosen, after checking at least 3 recent customers references yourself and through the Better Business Bureau and the US Department of Transportation, for an onsite estimate in writing. Do self assessment of what kind of services you need the moving company to do. Do you need the movers to pack and unpack? Do you need help to lift the boxes? Do you need a driver to take you from point A to point B? Clarify exactly what you need the movers to assist you on. Be specific will ensure that you will get precisely the relocation services that you expect.
- Get all the supplies you need for the move such as boxes, tapes, permanent markers.
- Start to pack, beginning with items used infrequently. Note items require additional care or insurance from your moving company. Clearly label each boxes.
- Go on line and change address at usps.gov and notify important contacts.
- Pack suitcases for each member of the family with enough clothes and personal items to last a few days.
- Take inventory of your moved items before the movers leave, preferably before you sign the accepted bill. Inspect for any damages. 10-15 percent of the total moving fee is a good tip. You may give the movers up to $100 if the move was a difficult one.
